Sergej Nakarjakov plays Bizet's Carmen

Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 52 in C minor Hob.I:52
Joseph Haydn: Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in C major Hob.VIIg:C1 (arr. for Flugelhorn)
Jean-Baptiste Arban: Variations sur le Carnaval de Venise (arr. for Trumpet and Orchestra)

The first concert of the PKF – LOBKOWICZ 2018 Donor Series combines an exceptional artist with an exceptional programme. At the start of the evening you will hear Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 52 in C minor, which in its temperament and content places it within the German pre-Romantic movement of the “Sturm und Drang”. Haydn incorporated into it the drama which corresponded to the revolutionary ideas of the period. The symphony is often referred to as the predecessor of Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony ‘Fate’, which is also characteristically in C minor. Alongside this symphonic composition you will also hear Joseph Haydn’s still refreshing Oboe Concerto in C major in an arrangement for flugelhorn and orchestra. The evening will conclude with Jean-Baptiste Arban’s popular Variations sur le Carnaval de Venise. Arban was himself a first-class brass player and passionate innovator. Among other things, he worked with Adolph Sax on the development of the saxophone. And if during the concert you have the feeling that you’re listening to the famous melody of the Czech song “Pes jitrničku sežral“, then you’re not far from the truth. The only question is, who came up with the tune first…?

Sergei Nakariakov – trumpet

Sergei Nakariakov, a trumpeter of Israeli-Russian origin, found his way to the trumpet thanks to his father, who became his teacher, mentor and helped him develop his exceptional musical talent. Sergei’s first instrument was the piano, and as he himself says, he would never have left this instrument had it not been for a serious back injury when he was nine. Today he plays in concerts across the world. Critics call him the “Paganini” or “Caruso” of the trumpet. In 1991 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival. He is the recipient of the Prix Davidoff and the ECHO Klassik Award 2002 in the category of “Instrumentalist of the Year”. He has worked with the giants of conducting such as Valery Gergiev, Sir Neville Marriner, Christoph Eschenbach and Kent Nagano. He also played the part of a Russian trumpeter in the Japanese film “Taiga-no itteki“.
